Bost Grist Mill in Concord, North Carolina was built in the early 1800's. The mill was the source of flour and cornmeal for southern Cabarrus County residents. On the National Register of Historic Places, the restored mill is filled with original milling equipment and artifacts. Step back in time, enjoy the antiques and watch corn being ground into cornmeal and grits. Admission is free.
Reed Gold Mine in Midland, North Carolina, is where the nation's first gold was discovered in 1799. The 17-pound nugget was used as a doorstop for three years before it was sold for $3.50. You can tour the restored underground tunnels and reconstructed stamp mill or hike and explore the Talking Rocks Trail. Try your luck panning for gold from May-October. Reed Gold Mine is a National Historic Landmark.
